Request for Proposals for Sculpture Design Concepts

Application Submittal Deadline:  Friday, December 9, 2022 by 11:59 p.m. (Mountain Standard Time)

Location:  The sculpture will be featured at Civic Green Park in Highlands Ranch, Colo.

OVERVIEW

The Kendrick Castillo Memorial Committee is requesting proposals for an outdoor public art sculpture to be placed at Civic Green Park in Highlands Ranch, Colo., in memory of Kendrick Castillo who died in a school shooting while protecting others. Artists are asked to submit design concepts by Dec. 9, 2022. Submissions should include the final price for the sculpture and the length of time it would take to complete it. The selected sculpture must be completed no later than 18 months after the design concept has received final approval.

Kendrick's parents will determine the final selected design concept. They have expressed interest in a bronze sculpture, but are open to other materials and design concepts. A message of inspiration that symbolizes possible themes of Kendrick, like the following, are encouraged:

- Christian faith. Scripture John 15:13 - "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends"

- Unconditional love for others.

- Sacrifice and heroism. His parents often tell other teens to "Live like Kendrick."

- His love for America and its flag.

- His passion for the mountains, outdoors and technology (off-roading in his Jeep, hunting, fishing, robotics, rocketry).

- Please DO NOT include a specific reference to STEM School Highlands Ranch in the design.

ABOUT KENDRICK RAY CASTILLO

Kendrick was a Colorado native born on March 14, 2001, who grew to be an amazing young man and hero. He was notoriously kind and selfless, and happiest when helping others. As an 18-year-old senior at STEM School in Highlands Ranch, he was eager to study electrical and mechanical engineering in college.

On May 7, 2019, just a few days shy of graduation, a shooter entered his school classroom. Kendrick died while fighting the shooter, but his heroic sacrifice prevented the deaths of others.

Kendrick was a devout Catholic Christian and was posthumously accepted into the Knights of Columbus. In fact, Philadelphia Archbishop Borys Gudziak called Kendrick a "saint for our times." He will forever be remembered by how he lived his Christian faith, just as he did that day by sacrificing himself for his friends and teachers.
